ALL KINDS OF SCARY…

Whenever someone finds out about the book, the first thing they think is- Oh, it’s not that scary.

And well, that depends on how much scary you can handle. Look as much as I LOVE Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated, Gravity Falls and The Goonies, as this book is a totally love letter / homage to those kinds of stories, they’re not the the only influences. As an 80’s - 90’s era kid, also I grew up watching stuff like Gremlins, The Gate, Monster Squad, IT (Which are all reasons I’m also a fan of Stranger Things) and they’re all great!

And even though most of them are considered “FOR KIDS” it’s really because when they’re funny, it helps make you forget how scary of a situation they’re actually in. Monster Squad, in my opinion, has one of the scariest werewolves in movie history, that is until he gets kicked in the junk with one of the kids seeing this in disbelief saying, “Wolfman’s got nards.” Now I could go on and keep giving more and more examples to hammer in my point, but if you know, you know. (And if you don’t know, go watch these movies and TV series, THEY ARE GREAT.)

But let’s stick with punting a werewolf’s pork and beans, for this point. That one moment has become the standard bearer to the feel of D.A.N.G.E.R!!! SQUAD. When coming up with every story, the very first mandate is, that it has to be is fun. The second requirement is, the danger has to be scary. Then the third check mark needs to be, what’s the angle that this scary- can be funny. Sometimes it can be as simple as as figuring out a funny take on the scary’s name. Or flipping the concept of why the scary is scary in the first place. And then doing that with every kind of scary. Monsters! Aliens! Magic! Sci-Fi! It all works and it’s all game!

Which is why the best feed back the book always gets is: ‘That thing legit creeped me out’ and ‘I’m giggling to myself way more than I expected’

So if you think you know know what you’re going to get with D.A.N.G.E.R!!! SQUAD before reading the book, we promise you, you don’t. And when you do read it, you like it more than you expected.

A HISTORY OF CREEPY NONSENSE…

Like every fun story, a good mystery needs a who, a what, a when, a why and you totally need a WHERE. There needs to be the kind of place that can make cryptids, aliens, occult cults, paranoid - conspiracy theory ghosts and everything else; feel like they could all be found in every shadow the D.A.N.G.E.R!!! Squad kids stumbled into. Enter town of FISH Valley.

Now a place when it comes to a place like FISH Valley, it has to feel like having an unassuming elderly neighbor that one day you find out used to a spy. It would feel completely impossible at first, and then the more you find out, along with the occasional pieces of evidence along the way, just makes slowly realize that this normal, unassuming has more crazy secrets than you could ever ☟︎︎☜︎︎☹︎︎☹︎︎⚐︎︎✍︎︎✏︎︎ ☟︎︎☜︎︎☹︎︎☹︎︎⚐︎︎✍︎︎✏︎︎ 👍︎︎✌︎︎☠︎︎ ✡︎︎⚐︎︎🕆︎︎ ☼︎︎☜︎︎✌︎︎👎︎︎💧︎︎ ❄︎︎☟︎︎✋︎︎💧︎︎✍︎︎ 👎︎︎✋︎︎👎︎︎ ✋︎︎ 💣︎︎✌︎︎😐︎︎☜︎︎ ✋︎︎❄︎︎ ❄︎︎☟︎︎☼︎︎⚐︎︎🕆︎︎☝︎︎☟︎︎✍︎︎✏︎︎ ✋︎☞︎ ✡︎⚐︎🕆︎ 👍︎✌︎☠︎🕯︎❄︎ 💧︎☜︎☜︎ ❄︎☟︎☜︎ ❄︎☼︎🕆︎❄︎☟︎ 🕆︎💧︎☜︎ ❄︎☟︎☜︎ ☹︎✋︎☝︎☟︎❄︎ ☞︎☼︎⚐︎💣︎ ⚐︎☠︎ ☟︎✋︎☝︎☟︎ 👌︎🕆︎❄︎ 👌︎☜︎☹︎⚐︎🕈︎

WHAT DOES D.A.N.G.E.R!!! MEAN…

Where did D.A.N.G.E.R!!! come from….

When I was growing up and just getting into comics, I was completely blown by how MUCH of everything there was. Super heroes, magic, street level vigilantes and SPIES! When I was reading the Avengers and thought this evil super science group called A.I.M, I had NO IDEA what does dots in between the letters were. I was 9 an admittedly dumb as a rock. I though it was because they must’ve only made laser guns and missiles. Turns out A.I.M stand for Advanced Idea Mechanics! And their leader was this giant head cyborg monster called M.O.D.O.K, and that stands for Mechanized Organism Designed Only for Killing! And their main enemy was this super spy agency called S.H.E.I.L.D, which since the first Iron Man movie retitled itself to Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. And then after finding the real world had the C.I.A, F.B.I, N.A.S.A, and that was it! I was all in on acronyms. So as I started working on this book, I hit this wall trying to figure out what to call the book and this group of kids.

I originally wanted to call The ADVENTURE CLUB. Which would have great if I wasn’t the 39 billionth person to thing that was fun title.

So then I went don the rabbit whole of ideas trying to figure an equal to or cooler option. Eventually I stumbled onto the word- DANGER.

Danger is a great, it’s both a warning and it sets the tone. You can point to it, run from it, acknowledge it and over come it. It’s just a great word. The problem there is that there’s a lot of people that thought the same thing. Not as much as ADVENTURE, but there was a lot. And at that moment I had to make choice, move on to another word or figure out a way to make this word work. And DAYS of not being able to think a single actual option, this silly idea popped in my head- How about an acronym?

So I looked at the word- DANGER.

Then I looked at word like this- D.A.N.G.E.R

And then I looked at the word like this:

D
A

N

G

E

R

And then I though about all the stories I made up or planned to tell and slowly D.A.N.G.E.R became:

Dark
Anomalies

Nightmarish

Ghouls

Exciting

Rescues

And I added way too many exclamation marks to let people know how exciting this book was going to be, and that’s how we ended up with…

IT ALL STARTED WITH A BED TIME STORY…

It all begins with an idea.

What’s up Squad!

Welcome to the first D.A.N.G.E.R!!! SQUAD blog post!

If you made it this far, I figure you must want to know more about what this whole thing is about. And honestly, sometimes I’m am blown away on far this whole idea has come.

My name is Eric DaSilva and before the world of pandemics and unfun conspiracy theories, I was just a stand up comedian, comic book nerd and a dad of two kids. And when I wasn’t on the road, I used to read bed time stories to my kids before they went to bed. Well eventually we got to the point where they got bored of all their books. The problem was non of the other books I tried introducing to them really hit.

Lemony Snicket was fun but gone too fast. Harry Potter was a surprising a hard pass for them. They liked Percy Jackson but it wasn’t that interesting. Then came The Last Kids On Earth. They liked that book a lot because apparently it was the closest thing they could get to the TV series like Gravity Falls and Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated, which they loved. They also loved the Goonies and O.G. Indiana Jones trilogy.

So one night, when I was trying to figure out what to read them, my kids said- “Dad, you write jokes and read comics, just make up a story.”

And so, at that moment, I thought about all the things I knew they liked. Spooky creatures, magic and mysteries and funny character moments. They liked the discovery of things, the adventure of escapes, near misses and fighting to protect your friends or for those who couldn’t fight for themselves. But they also liked when it was better to use your brain to out wit the bad guy.

Then I just telling this story, about a chubby 12 year old bio, moving to a small town, making some new friends and slowly learning about the creepy things that randomly happen in the night.

The next night they asked for me to tell the story again. And the night after that. And the night after that. Then they asked for a new story, but with the same characters!

Then a new story. And another story after that. Then they would tell me why something couldn’t happen because it already happened in a previous adventure. And thus cannon was formed and I needed to start making notes.

And then when my kids started having their friends over for sleepovers, specifically so I can tell their friends these stories, I knew I might have stumbled on to something.

And here we are.

So thank you for making it here! I really appreciate that you’re coming along for the ride. And I hope you’re all up for making some D.A.N.G.E.R!!!

Welcome to the squad!
